Uganda-Friday, 9th May, 2008, The New Vision .

US President, George Bush has assisted Uganda to procure DDT being sprayed against malaria-spreading mosquitoes, the Director General of Health Services Dr. Sam Zaramba, said on Thursday.

Zaramba told MPs yesterday the assistance is through the Presidential Malaria Initiative.

Dr. J. B Rwakimari, the Programme Manager, National Malaria Control Programme, told Saturday Vision the United States Agency has given Uganda $1m for DDT for Oyam and Apac. Indoor residual spraying is going on in the two districts but will spread to other districts. MPs were informed that Bundibugyo district had rejected indoor spraying because of fears that it will affect their organic cocoa, which they keep in their houses.

Kinkikizi East MP, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi said the European Union had assured Uganda that its products would be accepted.

I would like to say that was a smart move since, African countries have been banned from using DDT claiming that it is harmful to the ozone layer. Yes, it is, but its use to prevent and control malaria is handsome. African countries should not only copy what other countries do (i.e ban anything banned in other developed countries/states), but consider what they can be able to accommodate and what is of use to them. Answer this? Since developed countries produce much hydrocarbon gases, do we tell them to close all the firms producing however small content of these harmful gases? Lets protect our environment, but at first: lets make sure we are safe and healthy
