Kenya: Cholera Outbreak Claims Lives

AHIC- 17th March 2009 -Rift Valley Provincial Medical Officer, Dr.Ben Osore has ordered all eateries at Kamarich, Chemase, Ndurio, Kiprotkorik, Kapsaos and Koringin locations in Nandi district shut down following a cholera outbreak.

The outbreak has so far claimed three lives in Nandi district and the government has moved with speed in various districts to put control measures to ensure that it is contained.

Medical Officer of Health,Dr Anyango said medical officials have been mobilised and dispatched to the affected areas to sensitise the public on general hygiene to curb spread of the waterborne disease.

Dr.Anyango reiterated that high mobility of residents in the area partly to blame for the spread of the diseases and urged residents to sink pit latrines to improve hygiene. She also pointed out that most residents used bushes as toilets, thereby contaminating water sources.

The cholera situation is the country has led to WHO ranking Kenya among countries facing an acute health crisis over increasing cases of cholera.

The outbreak has so far affected eight districts in Rift Valley, Nyanza and North Eastern Provinces. The cholera outbreak in Moyale is reported at the border point of Kenya and Ethiopia raising challenges of containing it due to cross border movement.

Prisoners from Kakamega GK prisons are currently receiving treatment at the Kakamega provincial hospitals and others were treated at the prisons by Public health officials

Cholera is a waterborne disease characterised with profuse diarrhoea and vomiting. The disease is mainly transmitted through consumption of contaminated water and food stuff. Though cholera is easy to treat, it is fatal if no immediate treatment is given to stop dehydration and antibiotics to treat the infection
